RAL – 100 Years – Joy of Colour

On the occasion of its 100th anniversary, RAL COLOURS is collaborating with the internationally renowned Dutch design studio Raw Color to develop a limited anniversary edition of the most popular colour fans in the RAL CLASSIC colour collection – the colour collection that started the RAL COLOURS story 100 years ago.

In 2025, RAL celebrates its 100th anniversary. The ‘Reichsausschuss für Lieferbedingungen’ – or RAL for short – was founded in 1925. The German economy needed technical delivery conditions that could be used as rationalisation measures. RAL met this need with RAL registrations and RAL agreements. This is how the first colours of the RAL CLASSIC collection were defined and clearly named. The first RAL colour chart included 40 colours with the aim of standardising colours and being able to coat and paint industrial goods uniformly.

We are combining the sale of the anniversary edition with a donation for a good cause. For every anniversary edition sold via the RAL COLOURS online shop until 31 December 2025, we will donate a certain amount to the social organisation socialbee. This makes purchasing the anniversary edition twice as worthwhile.

RAL x Raw Color

Under the motto ‘RAL – 100 Years – Joy of Colour’, the Dutch design agency Raw Color has developed a special design for the RAL K5 gloss, RAL K5 semi-matt and RAL K7 Colour fans.

Raw Color is a design studio based in Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Founded by Christoph Brach and Daniera ter Haar, the studio works on a wide range of projects in the fields of graphic design, photography and product design. However, the common core of all Raw Color projects is always: colour.

So it is perfectly fitting that the Raw Color team has taken on the development of an anniversary design for RAL COLOURS.

Anniversary design for the RAL K5 and RAL K7 Colour fans

To develop the anniversary design, Raw Color dived into the history and application areas of the RAL CLASSIC colour collection, researched it, formed categories and assigned these colour tones to them.

The studio chose a design that shows individual shades from different categories and emphasises the combination of functionality and aesthetic design. At the same time, this establishes a link to the origin of the RAL COLOURS.

A total of five shades were selected to represent areas of application such as transport, communication technology and safety. A description was added to each colour to provide insights into the historical context of its use.

RAL 5017 Traffic Blue

Traffic blue is a striking and intense colour that was developed for traffic applications. This colour conveys warning and visibility. It is often used for signs, markings and safety equipment. RAL 5017 is used in many countries for signage on main roads.

RAL 3015 Light Pink

Light pink is a pale red with a pinkish hue which is specified as one of the multicore cable inner sheath colours according to DIN standards. Multicore cables are essential in high speed data transmission, including data centres and telecommunications. The colour is also applied for inspection stickers in Germany. These are issued to companies afterwards as a proof of electrical safety within their infrastructure.

RAL 1016 Sulfur Yellow

For two decades, many ambulances in Europe have been coated in Sulfur yellow as main colour with reflective and contrasting stripes. The colour was recommended by the European Committee of Standardisation. The choice is based on the eye’s response to a particular hue which culminate in the colour.

RAL 6002 Leaf Green

Leaf green is used in agricultural machinery and fencing. The shade has a moderate light reflectance value, which means that it reflects a balanced level of light, making it ideal for uses that require recognition and an unobtrusive appearance. Leaf green is used on emergency exit signs. It is the sign with a green background that displays an arrow and human pictogram running out of a door.

RAL 3000 Flame Red

Flame red is a colour that is widely linked to safety and rescue. Fire engines in many countries are lacquered with this striking and visible colour. RAL 3000 is also used for the emergency stop button of heavy machines. This colour was already part of the palette when RAL CLASSIC was introduced.

For every RAL K5 Colour fan (gloss and semi-matt) sold through the RAL COLOURS online shop by 31.12.2025, we donate € 1 to a good cause. For every RAL K7 Colour fan sold through the RAL COLOURS online shop by 31.12.2025, the donation is € 0.50.

The donation goes to the socialbee organisation.
